"A Grand Bahamian Vision" |

“A GRAND Bahamian Vision” is the result of collaborative
work by two Grand Bahamian artists – Chantal Bethel and Claudette Dean - who along with 13 local and international artists
were commissioned by DNP (Downtown Nassau Partnership)
for the installation of artistic murals throughout downtown
Nassau, The Bahamas.
“A GRAND Bahamian Vision “which is represented
by a pair of sunglasses captures part of the heritage and
culture of the Bahamian people. Each artist uses one lens to
share her vision with the viewer and the two lenses are
connected by the island of Grand Bahama. The Logo “GB”
on the sides of the glasses also references Grand Bahama.
The site for the mural is Bolam House located on George Street
in downtown Nassau.
As you view the mural the lens on the right is by Chantal Bethel and is a tribute to the Bahamas National Youth Choir celebrating
life and their 20th anniversary dancing on the beach.
The lens on the left is by Claudette Dean and the theme is
“WE R 1” which is promoting unity. The scene is a beach with
children and people of all colors enjoying themselves, to the far
left a young girl and boy, one black one white, are holding hands
and walking along the beach.

In 2009 Chantal Bethel was invited to participate in theCentreville
House project.
A community project, the transformation of
the grounds of Centreville House, facilitated by Lindroth
Development Company and the National Museum of the Bahamas
(Antiquities, Monuments & Museums Corporation), was undertaken
and designed by Antonius Roberts, Sculptor and Open Space
Designer.
The Bench which celebrates the Lucayan Indians, is a
Memorial to Bethel’s late father – Agronomist, Dr. S. Roger Victor. Centreville House is now the home of The National Museum of The Bahamas Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation, Nassau, Bahamas.

A Question of Faith: the Journey of Freetown – An Historical Perspective told through art is the first project of its kind on Grand Bahama island where art and history are entwined to record the history of a settlement’s residents.
The project was the brainchild of Chantal Bethel and her friend Laurie Tuchel ,co-founders of the G.B.Heritage Foundation.
The project which began in December, 2008 and was completed in November of 2009 was achieved with the collaboration of Artist in Residence - Teacher and Storyteller – Lauren Austin - AMMC (Antiquities, Monuments and Museums Corporation of the Bahamas) and Mackey Media.

Freedom Call Cultural Show and Art Exhibition (2007) |

In 2007, the world commemorated the 200th anniversary of the
abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
Chantal Bethel and Claudette Dean organized a cultural show and Fine Art
Exhibition in Freeport, G.B. in commemoration of this important
event in the history here in the Bahamas.
Thirteen of the country’s top artists participated and Mr. Antonius Roberts
curated the show. The event which included songs, dance, poetry
and drama was held under the auspices
of The Grand Bahama Heritage Foundation.
The Grand Bahama Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization
Co-founded and Co-chaired by Chantal Bethel and Laurie Tuchel.
GBHF's mission is to research and celebrate the history of the island.
In cases where artifacts are few, original artworks reflecting the
History of the island will be created through interactive programs
between inhabitants and artists in residence. |

All Things Bright and Beautiful Project (2000) |

In 2002 Chantal E.Y. Bethel and Claudette Dean were invited by
Mrs. Lavender Roberts, an early childhood department teacher, to
facilitate and participate in the creation of artwork by students of
Sunland Lutheran School’s early childhood department.
The project was inspired by a similar project undertaken by
renowned Bahamian artist Mr. Antonius Roberts.
Works were
created by students and then refined by the artists and signed
by both students and artist. Twelve of the artworks were selected
and the end result was the “All Things Bright and Beautiful” calendar.
Its publication was sponsored by Miami Children’s Hospital who
also hosted a reception and art exhibition of the works under the
theme “Children Helping Children”.
The original artworks were
auctioned off and the calendar was sold, proceeds went in aid of
the early childhood department of Sunland Lutheran School.
In
the words of Mrs. Lavender Roberts “The children were creative and learned to work along with others in a fun filled environment,splashing paint and deciding on what to paint. This experiencewas a wonderful success for all involved.”
